About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Legal Officer to join our Legal Services team. This role provides comprehensive legal support to the Bank, ensuring legal, regulatory, and commercial risks are effectively managed while supporting business operations across the organisation. Reporting to the Head of Legal, the Senior Legal Officer is responsible for delivering timely, accurate, and practical legal advice across a broad range of matters. The role also provides leadership, guidance, and oversight to other legal officers, ensuring professional standards and best legal practices are maintained.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and services to support the Bank’s operational, commercial, and strategic activities.
- Draft, review, and advise on legal documents and contracts.
- Represent and manage legal matters involving courts, regulators, and external legal counsel.
- Ensure legal advice is accurate, practical, commercially sound, and delivered in a timely manner.
- Maintain accurate legal records and manage files in line with legal practice requirements.
- Supervise, mentor, and provide training to other legal officers.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies.
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold the highest standards of honesty and integrity.
- Maintain a valid practising certificate and stay up to date with legal and regulatory developments.
Qualifications, Experience and Skills
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB).
- Admission to practice as a Lawyer in the National and Supreme Courts of PNG.
- Minimum 10 years’ experience as a practising lawyer in litigation and/or commercial law.
- Banking or financial services experience (highly desirable).
- Strong understanding of court processes and registries.
- Strong legal drafting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- High level of commercial awareness and business acumen.
- Strong planning, organisation, and workflow management capability.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Ability to mentor and work collaboratively within a team.
- Demonstrated accountability, quality focus, and customer-centric mindset.
